All Fans Are Invited to Join as the Additional Haim Sisters Member.

"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

However, there remains a single issue: I also longs to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are not alone. Multiple high-profile supporters have publicly petitioned for the honor.

It's clear a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the best ensembles, they're a close gang. Their music videos repeatedly depict them walking in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless happiness you find yourself thinking, "I want to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the greatest honour. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire people to start a band."

"And thus everyone gets an invitation to be the fourth member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The group are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the honor isn't lost on the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the female artists that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The album came out of a time of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that strange liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The themes follow endings and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to consciously practice shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That developed resilience required a different sonic direction – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Humor

The band's openness shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal horror stories.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their place in the industry.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an global following.

However Haim will forever be their primary commitment.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was a young child," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still making music."
