At Least 6 Perish in Stampede at Ghana Military Recruitment Drive
At least six people have lost their lives during a stampede at a military recruitment event held in a sports arena in the West African nation.
The midweek "tragic" event seems to have been triggered by "an unexpected surge of candidates who breached security protocols and rushed into the entrances," stated a statement from the nation's military.
Twenty-two others were injured, among them five who are in critical condition.
A large crowd had turned up at the El-Wak sports venue, in the main city, Accra, with the aspiration of joining the military.
The country has a youth unemployment rate of about thirty-two percent, the most recent official data indicate, and such enlistment drives normally attract large crowds and often lead to disorderly situations.
The closing date to submit applications for this recruitment was prolonged for a week to allow for more applicants, as a number had experienced challenges in the application procedure.
Military representative Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin said the stampede occurred before the event's scheduled start of 06:20 GMT.
The nation's leader John Mahama has visited the injured in medical care.
Order has been reestablished, and the enlistment process has now started.
