Just as the recent storm hit the northwest the previous evening, City blew Manchester United away at the their home ground. It was a statement three goal win for their manager's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their leadership claims as they reinforced their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Setbacks for United

This scoreline marked back-to-back WSL losses for the United manager's side for the first time since spring 2024, placing them a significant margin off the top team with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

United’s ability to juggle domestic and continental soccer with a thin squad has been a frequently analyzed issue since they qualified for the European competition. Looking at the calendar, it always seemed this was the matchday that would fully examine this fortitude. Regrettably for the away side, they looked tired throughout, the landmark win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having taken a toll.

Team Changes

The hosts, in contrast, could have extended their cushion when a delightful Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the winning team. After failing to defeat any opponent who placed above them last season, City's side now have victories against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a commanding standing after nine games.
