Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying such treatments must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural support.
